Sr. UNIX Systems Engineer- SMSS | SONY | San Diego, CA

Title: Sr. UNIX Systems Engineer
The purpose of the Sr. Systems Engineer is to provide planning, recommendations and be responsible for maintenance on all hardware and software for all Unix infrastructures and rollout of these strategies both internally and externally.  In general, responsibilities will include any requirements regarding the Unix environment, from day to day system administration to planning and management as well as other duties as assigned.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Plan, design, and build medium and large-scale Unix environments and provide computing services required by end users, which can include process automation using shell scripts or other programming languages. 
  • Ensure the reliable backup of critical systems and data. 
  • Analyze user requirements, procedures, and problems to automate processing or to improve existing systems.
  • Confer with personnel of business units to analyze and document current operational procedures, identify problems, and learn specific system requirements.
  • Write detailed description of user needs, program functions, and steps required to develop or modify systems.  
  • Create and maintain documentation of environment design and workflow. 
  • Provide timelines for specific tasks assigned. 
  • Review computer system capabilities, workflow, and scheduling limitations to determine if requested program or program change is possible within existing system.
  • Study existing information processing systems to evaluate effectiveness and develop new systems to improve production or workflow as required.
  • Prepare workflow and network diagrams that specify the operations performed by the applications running on systems.
  • Engineer automated systems to ensure stability and security of Unix environments. 
  • Assist developers in resolving work problems related to project specifications and/or system configuration. 
  • Provide end-user support as required.

Job Requirements:
  • A minimum of 5 years supporting medium to large scale production web environments is required. 
  • Strong scripting skills are required (shell, perl or python).
  • Extensive experience tuning kernel and system parameters of Red Hat Linux and Sun Solaris based systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of Intel and Sun-based hardware
  • Expert knowledge of various TCP/IP protocols.
  • Extensive experience working with enterprise (SAN/NAS) storage systems.
  • Expert knowledge of Tomcat and Apache.
  • Must possess a strong ability to document standards, methods and produce drawings of environments. 
  • Highly effective and professional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong ability to perform multiple tasks at a high level. 
  • Ability to meet timelines, work under pressure and have strong analytical/problem solving skills. 
  • Exceptional team work as well as being able to work under own initiative are highly desired. 
  • Take part in 24x7x365 on-call coverage as part of the proactive, production support role.
